Short Curriculum Vitae

My name is Wolfgang Faber (in case you haven't already noticed). I was born in Vienna on April 8th in 1974. I lived in Vienna until 1979, when my family finally moved to Groß-Enzersdorf, an old city east of Vienna.

There I went to the local Kindergarten for one year and after that I attended Groß-Enzersdorf's Volksschule (kind of Primary School) for 4 years.

I went to secondary school in Vienna's first district (at Schottengymnasium); that implied a two-hour-trip per day (that is, two hours in both directions). The type of school was 'Neusprachliches Gymnasium', which means that one has to learn two foreign languages (English and French in my case) and Latin. The underlying paradigm is, however, to learn a bit of everything ("Allgemeinbildung"). I graduated in 1992.

I then decided to study either informatics or 'economically-focused informatics' ("Wirtschaftsinformatik"). When I realized that the Wirtschaftsinformatik study was not very well organized in the sense that no clear directives existed, I decided to start studying Informatik (computer science).

During this study, I was employed at the university several times: As tutor for a beginner's course in Logic Programming in 1994, 1996, and 1997. In 1995 and 1996, I was employed as "Studienassistent" at the Institut für Computersprachen . Later, in 1997 and 1998, I received a research grant from the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) for working in the dlv project.

I finished my study with honors on June 9th, 1998. My thesis was "Disjunctive Datalog with Strong and Weak Constraints - Representational and Computational Issues, advised by Prof. Nicola Leone and Gerald Pfeifer. The examinators of my "Diplomprüfung" (the final exam) were Prof. Nicola Leone, Prof. Uwe Egly, and Prof. Andreas Krall.

After that, from July 1998 until September 1999 I was employed in the abovementioned FWF project. Please look at the project page and my research page to find out what I did there.

Since October 1st, 1999, I am employed at the Abteilung für Wissensbasierte Systeme as Universitätsassistent. However, I am still allowed to do some work in the dlv project.

Private Activities

I have been a volunteer at Groß-Enzersdorf's Red Cross station. I have been on duty almost every Tuesday, but with the beginning of 1999, I resigned due to lack of time.

I enjoy running. Usually I run between 4 and 20 kilometers. My favourite routes are along Donaukanal, in Prater, Lobau and on Donauinsel. Once I also ran from Wolfsthal (near Hainburg) to Groß-Enzersdorf, which was truly quite exhausting. I've also participated in 1999's Vienna City Marathon, and finished in 4:59:47. I'm not really happy with the time, but I'm glad that I finished at all, since it was extremely hot on that day.

I am running a Linux box at home. I first installed this great operating system in 1994 (I think). In the meantime, I do not need to have any Microsoft product on my harddisk. I use the Debian GNU/Linux distribution. Up to now I had a dirty system which I upgraded manually. Thanks to all the people who write great free software! Be sure to visit the GNU Project!

I enjoy listening to music, but my preferences are somewhat non-mainstream. My favorites include:

Oh, I played drums and percussion in a small amateur band for quite some time.
