Attention: Please note that the submission deadline has been extended to Friday, the 8th of June, and the
acceptance notification has been moved to the 11th of July.

The world-wide web is by far the largest data source. To transform data into information the user has to have means to process the resources. This is not an easy task with todays tools. Innovation is needed to build next generation mediators between users and the distributed information on the web. The workshop will focus on substantial contributions of the fields of AI for this task. Potential topics of the workshop are the application of AI methods to

  • discovery, automated extraction, and transformation of data (such as pattern detection, wrapper generation, logic-based extraction languages, extraction heuristics)
  • information integration and mediation (such as web ontologies, query languages for semistructured data, representation of semistructured data, constructing knowledge bases, agent-based approaches)
  • monitoring documents and tracking changes (such as comparing XML documents, evaluation of ubiquitous and continuous queries, information filtering using machine learning, publish-subscribe systems).
  • presentation of information (such as personalised information views, document construction, multi-modal information presentation, user modelling)
System demonstrations are warmly welcome.

Attendance
The workshop will be of interest to academics, graduate students, and industry researchers/engineers working on the boundaries of information processing and artificial intelligence. Participants are expected to register for the KI-2001 conference. The workshop language will be English.

Call for Papers
We invite contributions that advance the state-of-the-art in topics related to the purpose of the workshop. Persons interested in participating should submit either a technical paper (not exceeding eight pages) or a position paper (not exceeding three pages) addressing new research issues. Please use fonts not smaller than 10 pt and submit papers in pdf or ps format only. Format instructions for camera-ready copies will be available after notification of acceptence. Abstracts are required to be of a length of about 100 to 150 words. Please submit your papers and any questions to webAI01@dbai.tuwien.ac.at. The papers will be reviewed by members of the program committee. Accepted papers will be published online and selected papers will be considered for publication in a special issue or section of the AICOM journal.

Preliminary Schedule
19.3.01 official call for participation launched
8.6.01 paper submission deadline (was 1.6.01)
11.07.01 notification of acceptance (was 29.6.01)
13.07.01 release of preliminary workshop program (was 2.7.01)
24.8.01 submission deadline for camery-ready papers

17.9.01 workshop webAI'01

Proposed Workshop Schedule
For full papers each presentation is 20 minutes including additional 10 minutes for discussion. To encourage discussions, accepted contributions will be published on the Web before the workshop. As a consequence, the background of all participants will be known beforehand and presentations and discussions can focus on the technical questions. Participants will be encouraged to prepare questions for speakers.
