Three Research Studentships
Three three-year research studentships for home/EU students are
available in the Department of Computer Science, University of Essex,
starting from October 1999 or as soon as possible thereafter.
Set in 200 acres of parkland near the historic town of
Colchester, the University of Essex campus is a lively,
international community of over 6500 students of whom
around 1200 are postgraduates.
The Department of Computer Science has active research groups in
Adaptive Computing, Distributed Information Systems, Logic and
Formal Methods, Multi-Agent Systems, Numerical Computing, and
Quality Video over IP Networks. Further information about the

Informal enquiries to academic staff about possible research projects
are welcome. Potential areas for PhD study include:
- Adaptive Computing:
constraint programming, financial analysis tools, machine learning,
neural networks, speech recognition
- Distributed Information Systems:
knowledge discovery and data mining, natural language processing,
database query optimisation, text and database retrieval
- Logic and Formal Methods
analysis of real-time systems, constructive Z, foundations for Z
- Multi-Agent Systems
artificial societies, intelligent buildings, multi-agent vision,
- Robotics and Intelligent Machines
agricultural vehicles, football-playing robots, simulation of
autonomous vehicles, vision.
- Numerical Computation
- Quality Video over IP Networks
Applications are invited from suitably qualified applicants who hold a
first or upper second degree in computer science, mathematics, electronic
engineering or a related discipline. Applicants must also be able to
demonstrate ability to teach tutorial and laboratory sessions in the
The studentships will meet Home/EU fees and maintenance based on
current EPSRC rates, together with hourly paid teaching.
Applicants will be required to teach up to 6 contact hours per week
during term time.
