Title : NN/FS/GA/Chaos Technologies in Real World

Soft computing technologies such as NN (neural networks), FS (fuzzy systems)
and GA (genetic algorithms) have been widely researched and are in frequent
use today. So that one can use these useful technologies practically, this
tutorial introduces how these technologies have been used for industrial
systems and commercial products. The objective of this tutorial is not to
introduce application products themselves but to introduce technical models
of these applications. Therefore, participants will learn something from case
studies in different application fields; for example, engineers in chemical
industry can learn how to use these models from models used in consumer
products.

This tutorial introduces not only the above applications but also the
research history and several models of cooperative technologies in
NN/FS/GA/Chaos. Thus this tutorial is also useful for students and scientists
starting their research in these fields.

Title : Models and Tools for Decision Support in Ill-structured
Environments.

Abstract

Decision Support Systems(DSS) should be geared to the need of the
decision maker and to the type of decision he or she is
making.Hence,there cannot be a general DSS which is useful everywhere
and always.There are,however,some functions in the decision making
process which,if relevant for a decision,can be supported by
userfriendly software:these are, amongst others,the generation of
potential decision alternatives,the structering of information,the
determination of consequences of decisions(if-then simulation),and
the choice between alternatives(particularly when multiple criteria
have to be considered).
These functions are particularlydifficult to perform,if the situation
is ill-structured,i.e.if information is
missing,contradictory,uncertain,or vague.
Tools exist in the crisp as well as in the fuzzy domain,which can be
very helpful to the decision maker,if combined adequately.From a
methodological point of view tools and methods are either algorithmic
or knowledge based.
In this tutorial these approaches will be presented exemplarily:For
the algorithmic tools Fuzzy Multi Criteria Optimization Methods will
be decribed,if time permits also methods for classification and
databank marketing.For knowledge-based approaches Fuzzy Expert
Systems Technology will be discussed.Finally a hybrid algorithmic and
knowledge-based system for production control will be presented.

The past few years have witnessed a crystallization of soft computing
as a distinct body of concepts and techniques which is oriented toward the
conception and design of intelligent systems. Soft Computing is not a single
methodology. Rather it is a partnership of fuzzy logic, neurocomputing and
probabilistic reasoning, with the latter subsuming genetic algorithms, chaotic
systems, belief networks and parts of learning theory.
Within soft computing, the principal contribution of fuzzy logic is a
methodology for exploiting the tolerance for imprecision to achieve
tractability, robustness, low solution cost and better rapport with reality.
However, what is becoming increasingly clear is that there are many situations
in which it is advantageous to employ fuzzy logic, neurocomputing and
probabilistic reasoning in combination rather than exclusively. At this
juncture, neurofuzzy systems have the highest visibility, with fuzzy-genetic
and neuro-fuzzy-genetic systems steadily gaining in importance.
In the years ahead, such hybrid systems are likely to find wide-
ranging applications, especially in the realm of high MIQ systems. This is the
keynote theme of the 1996 NAFIPS Conference. Reflecting this theme, NAFIPS'96,
with over 100 papers, will focus on - but not be limited to:

Fuzzy Systems, Genetic Algorithms, Neural Networks, Neuro and Fuzzy Control,
Pattern Recognition, Image Processing, Fuzzy Sets and Possibility Theory,
Fuzzy Databases, Approximate Reasoning, Engineering, Scientific and
Business Applications


CONFERENCE AND CONFERENCE SITE

Plenary talks will be given by:

Lotfi Zadeh - "Fuzzy Logic: The Challenges and Perspectives,"
Hans Zimmermann - "Fuzzy Logic on the Frontiers of Decision Analysis and
Expert Systems," and
Michio Sugeno - "Fuzzy Logic on the Frontiers of Control."

Some sessions will include extended presentations titled:

"Current Overview: Past, Present, and Future"

on the session topic delivered by experts such as Jim Bezdek, Jim Keller,
Witold Pedrycz, Ronald Yager, Maria Zemankova, and Hans Zimmermann.
The conference also plans to include an exhibition of state-of-the-art
hardware and software products. An exhibition prospectus and space reservation
can be obtained from the Local Chair.
The conference will be held on the Berkeley campus in Soda Hall, the
newly completed Computer Science Building. The banquet site will be
the University of California Art Museum with dinner served in the art
galleries.
Cost conscious local hotel and dormitory arrangements are being made
starting at $38/single per night.
