COURSE DESCRIPTION

The course begins with an introduction of the notion of fuzzy logic in
the engineering context. It is then followed by an in-depth treatment
of basic theory, discussion of implementation issues, and application
case studies. Emphasis is placed on the understanding of the nature of
fuzzy logic, and systematic methods that allow the generation of fuzzy
rules and membership functions. Implementation tools ranging from
PC-based software packages to fuzzy chips are reviewed. The applications
of fuzzy logic in a number of areas including control, signal processing,
pattern recognition, optimization, etc., are discussed in detail as case
studies. There will also be a practical session where a CAE fuzzy control
design software called FlexControl will be distributed to the participants
to conduct fuzzy control system simulation.

The course is intended for engineers, scientists, instructors, and managers
who are interested in improving their understanding of this exciting
technology, and exploring the potential of fuzzy logic for solving their
problems.

ABOUT COURSE INSTRUCTOR

Dr Shaohua Tan received his PhD degree in electrical engineering from
Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium in 1987. He worked as a research
fellow in the ESAT lab., Dept. Electrical Engineering, Katholieke Universiteit
Leuven before joining in 1991 in the Dept. of Electrical Engineering, National
University of Singapore, where he is now a Senior Lecturer. He has been
working in the areas of systems and control, digital signal processing,
speech processing and artificial neural nets. His current research interests
are in intelligent control and pattern recognition using neural nets and
fuzzy system techniques. He is the chief designer and team leader for
the development of the CAE fuzzy control platform called "FlexControl,"
now available as a commercial product.
