House Rules for the Ancient Wars Series - Shipwrecks are far too common. When a shipwreck occurs on a non-winter turn, roll again. A shipwreck only occurs on a roll of 1-2. - In those games where recruiting of legions is permitted from Roman colonies, only one legion per year per colony can be recruited. - When using the battleboard rules from MOVES 77 (or the Trajan rules), make the following change: - The side that gains tactical advantage decides whether terrain features present in the battle hex are used in setup, or whether the battleboard is treated as clear. - Do not count strength points to determine the panic limit. Instead, use the following scale: Units that have 1 or 2 strength points count '1'. Larger units count '2'. Heavy units count double. E.g., a Roman legion infantry unit (heavy, strength 5), is worth '4' (This rule is very important, since counting strength points means that units such as the Parthian cataphracts, which represent the creme de la creme of Parthian society, are throwaway units, while 10-point skirmishing archers have to be protected at all costs. If you count only units, then the loss of a couple of light auxiliaries can send a Roman army over the edge while the legions are still unhurt. Using the above ratings, a reasonable balance is achieved.)
