G D Birla Award for Indian Statistical Inst. scientist

New Delhi: The ninth G D Birla Award for Scientific Research for the
year 1999 has been awarded to Dr Sankar K Pal, scientist and Head
of the Machine Intelligence Unit, Indian Statistical Institute,
Calcutta. The award, conferred by the K K Birla Foundation,
comprises a cash prize of Rs 1.5 lakh. It is awarded in recognition of
high calibre scientific research undertaken by Indian scientists below
the age of 50, who are living and working in India. Dr Pal, 49, has
been selected for the award for his contribution to "pattern
recognition, machine learning and image processing as well as the
use of soft computing approaches". His research has been used to
solve day-to-day problems using "fuzzy sets, neural networks,
neuro-fuzzy computing and genetic algorithms". Dr Pal is a prolific
scholar, having authored six books and more than 250 research
papers. He has also received two Ph.D. degrees, one in Electronics
from the University of Calcutta, and the other in Electrical
Engineering, from the University of London.
