CALL FOR PAPERS

Fuzzy Logic and Soft Computing in Multimedia Information Systems
November 5, 1999, 9:00 17:00, Orlando, Florida, USA

http://www.dat.ruc.dk/~hll/MM99fuzzy/home.htm

1-day workshop in connection to

7th ACM Multimedia Conference, October 30 November 5, 1999, Orlando,
Florida
http://www.acm.org/sigs/sigmm/MM99/

In the recent years much work has addressed the problem of enhancing
database technology to better support today's and future's needs of
efficient and effective storage and retrieval of multimedia information. The
amount of multimedia information is rapidly increasing and made widely
accessible through the internet. The utilization of information to its full
potential requires powerful mechanisms for representing and processing
information objects as well as knowledge about such objects. Examples of
such processes and the kind of tasks using them are multimedia data
analysis, object representation, object recognition, object classification,
query answering, and information retrieval. The inherent vagueness and
uncertainty in the object representation - as an image of the real thing, in
the language in which we refer to the real ting, in the conceptual and
spatio-temporal relationship between such objects, etc. - calls for the use
of fuzzy sets and soft computing techniques.

The aim of this workshop is to present and discuss newer approaches using
fuzzy logic and soft computing in enhancing multimedia information systems
to meet these needs. The topics of the workshop include, but are not
limited to, the following as related to the theme and aim of the workshop:

o multimedia information retrieval (of text, image, video, and sound
objects)
o content-based information retrieval
o pattern recognition and matching in multimedia information access
o image processing
o similarity and soft computing in multimedia information access
o soft computing and internet multimedia information access
o soft computing supported information visualization, browsing and
navigation
o multimedia data analysis
o classification and indexing of multimedia information objects
o terminological knowledge and ontologies in multimedia object domains
o fuzzy information & knowledge representation in multimedia databases and
ontologies
o ontology-based multimedia information access
o ontology creation (learning, discovery, engineering)
o enhancements of database technology for multimedia information objects

WORKSHOP STRUCTURE
The workshop contains a number of invited talks, presenting the results and
positions of researchers and their laboratories. A panel will attempt to
define the current and future challenges of fuzzy logic and soft computing
in multimedia information systems.

09:00 11:00 Invited talks, each 30 min, including discussion
11:30 12:30 Short presentations of accepted papers from this call, each
15 min
13:30 15:00 Continuation of short presentations
15:30 17:00 Round table discussion, and summary of results

Consult the workshop homepage for updates regarding the workshop schedule,
and publication plans:
