It is similar, but very different from the Soundex encoding.

A further problem, there does not seem to be a clear specification! The
original article was published with an incomplete Pick BASIC

I can't add much to the above, but I can at least tell you that I found
the same thing when I searched for this on the Web. I suppose that if
you're looking for the "true" Metaphone, it would be the code version
listed in the article.
