Call for Papers

Special Issue
of
IEEE Transactions on Fuzzy Systems
on
Recognition Technology

Significant Dates
Paper due: Oct. 1, 1999
Reviews Due: Jan. 31, 2000
Journal Appears: Summer, 2000

Fuzzy Systems are playing significant roles in pattern recognition systems.
These systems go beyond laboratory experiments performed on computers with
small data sets; they involve large scale developments on very large data
sets from real systems. The research and development activities that are
undertaken to produce such recognition systems often involve interaction
between universities, industries, and government agencies.

Lotfi Zadeh has stated that "In coming years, recognition technology is
likely to play a pivotal role in the conception, design, construction and
utilization of information/intelligent systems" [1]. Systems that have
incorporated fuzzy sets include speech recognition systems, handwriting
recognition systems, computer virus detection, eye-print identification,
supermarket checkout scanners, molecular breath-analyzers , password
authentication, email filtering, seizure prediction, unexploded ordnance and
landmine detection, and others [1].

The purpose of the special issue is to create an archive of descriptions of
fuzzy methods in recognition systems. Papers are sought in this area.
The systems described in the paper must involve significant applications of
fuzzy sets to real recognition system problems and should demonstrate results
on real data. Potential authors should attempt to not only describe
methodologies and systems but to provide a discussion of the lessons learned
in the development of a recognition system and the implications for further
research in fuzzy sets.

All papers will be peer-reviewed using the usual reviewing standards of the
journal. All papers must include detailed descriptions of methods and data.
