My problem concerns the fault diagnosis of a specific solid waste
management system. Because I don t have any experience in expert systems
in general and especially in fuzzy expert system I can t predict what
kind of fuzzy operations, composition e.t.c. the expert system should
support.

In problems of classification (like trouble-shooting) the method of
evaluating union, intersection and defuzzifying is much less important than
the ability to have discrete non-numeric fuzzy sets of possible
classifications. In fifteen years of experience, max-min logic has served us
very well with very few exceptions. However, almost no fuzzy shells allow
discrete non-numeric fuzzy sets whose grades of membership are accessible to
the programmer and can be carried from one reasoning step to the next. (The
only shells we know of which can do this are FLOPS and FRIL.) In problems of
diagnosis, in our experience defuzzification is almost never carried out or
needed. my Web page http://users/aol.com/wsiler/ and look at the short manual
"Building fuzzy expert systems".

The Web page will shortly be updated and expanded to http://fuzzy-sys.com,
but this will not be for a couple of weeks.
