Detecting Bubbles in Digital Images

I was wondering if anyone knew of any good image processing algorithms
for detecting bubbles (or other circular objects) in digital images
where the bubbles cannot be segmented on the basis of grey level. I
have posted this question to sci.image.processing and my interpretation
of the replies I got from there is that the best approach is to use a
Hough Transform and possibly image consolidation. Some people suggested
ellipse fitting algorithms but these would appear to require a priori
point detection per segmentation. Since grey-level segmentation is
totally unfeasible, I really need a shape-based method.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
