pattern recognition

Hi, I am looking for online articles on pattern recognition using fuzzy
systems. Any pointers or URLs appreciated.

I am a little familiar with the work of Bart Kosko and basically
understand fuzzy logic and how a fuzzy controller works.

What I am not so sure about is how fuzzy logic can be used in pattern
recognition. In a control system, it seems that one can use linguistic
rules to generate fuzzy logic functions. However, for pattern
recognition, there is an absence of linguistic variables like that,
correct?

Is is true one must use a genetic algorithm or neural net to generate
the FAM rules from input data and a GA or neural net to generate the
weightings for the output rules.

(where FAM is "fuzzy associated memory", a matrix that represents a
transformation observed in the training data)

Is this the general idea behind pattern recognition with fuzzy systems,
or am I way, way off? :-)

Thanks,

Alex Rice
