EPSRC CASE / Total Technology Studentship
Cranfield university, UK

Title: Integrating Quantitative and Qualitative Knowledge for
Cost Modelling

Sponsor: British Aerospace Military Aircraft and Aerostructures

Duration: Oct. 1999 - Sept. 2003

There is a possible FULLY FUNDED PhD Studentship (CASE/TT) in the above
mentioned area. Cranfield University is actively involved with BAe
Military to research in the areas of Cost Engineering. This research
will be an extension of existing work. The research will study
qualitative aspects of cost modelling for military aircraft. The study
will identify the quantitative and qualitative knowledge for cost
estimation. The quantitative and qualitative knowledge will be
integrated within a 'soft model' framework. The research will define an
integrated 'knowledge model' for the domain. Data collection will
involve analysis of past data, workshops and interviews with
experienced cost and manufacturing engineers. The study will include
investigations into Aritificial Intelligence (AI) techniques, such
Fuzzy Logic for the qualitative cost modelling. The PhD student will
require to spend a large part of his/her time with the sponsoring
company.

EPSRC is expected to pay tuition fees to Cranfield. The student would
receive around 10K pounds sterling tax free per annum for three years.
Interested graduate/postgraduate students with manufacturing/mechanical
engineering background are invited to submit their CV for an informal

programming skill and AI will be beneficial. The minimum academic
requirement for entrants to the degree is an upper second class honours
degree or its equivalent. Please note that the funding is restricted to
British Nationals, in special cases it may be offered to an EC
national.
