Intellectual Copyright

As a programmer, if I write a program for a company, I still retain
copyright to the code (unless a prior arrangment assigns the copyright
to the customer).

How does this apply to knowledge? If I develop a knowledge base - who
owns it?

If I own it, what rights do the originators of the knowledge have over
the knowledge?

Deep eh?
