CALL FOR PAPERS

Special Issue of Computer-Aided_Design

Conceptual Design: Issues and Challenges

Guest Editors:
Wynne Hsu and Bing Liu
National University of Singapore

Deadline for Submission of Full Papers: 30 September 1999
Expected Publication: April 2000

Decisions made during conceptual design have significant influence on the
cost, performance, reliability, safety and environmental impact of a
product. Even the highest standard of detail design can never compensate
for a poor concept. However, knowledge of the design requirements and
constraints during this early phase of a product's life cycle is usually
imprecise and incomplete, making it a difficult to utilize computer-based
systems or prototypes. Few CAD tools have therefore been developed to
support conceptual design.

This special issue of Computer-Aided Design will address the unique issues
and challenges posed by conceptual design, present recent results in early
prototyping, and suggest potential directions for future research.

Authors are invited to submit manuscripts that demonstrate original
research in these areas. Topics of interest include, but are not limited
to the following:

* New approaches to conceptual design.
* Representations of imprecise and incomplete designs.
* Early prototyping systems.
* Integration of conceptual design, and design for assembly and
manufacture.
* Acquisition and learning of design concepts from past designs.
* Evaluation of alternative initial designs.

Well-researched survey papers are also welcome.

All papers will be refereed. Authors should consult the "Notes for
Authors", which are printed at the back of most issues of Computer-Aided
Design, for information about preparation of their manuscripts; please
note especially the requirement for a statement that the paper has not
been submitted elsewhere. Papers of an appropriate standard which are
not included in the special issue may be considered for publication in a
regular issue of Computer-Aided Design.

Please submit papers (four copies) to:
