Dennis Ettes and I wrote a paper entitled "Representation and Learning Capabilities
of AdditiveFuzzy Systems" (presented at INES'98 and NAIC'98). The paper is
downloadable from

http://www.few.eur.nl/few/people/jvandenberg/publ/index.htm

The second part of it deals with learning from (noisy) data using validation and
using
a fuzzy decision tree algorithm where the number of fuzzy rules derived is
minimized.
Experimental results (of experiments with chaotic time series) show that indeed
simple
rules are derived which also appear to be interpretable!!

Good luck,

Jan van den Berg
