Dear Biscers,

As suggested by Professor Zadeh I would like to inform you about the
overwhelming response which the SIG on IM&FD had from scientists around the
World. This brief Report will be the last sent to all BISC group by our SIG. By
now only our registered members will receive information. Therefore I invite all
the interested ones to e-mail me if they want to be added to our mailing list.

1. Up to now we have identified strong research in the field in Japan, USA,
Canada, Germany, Italy, France, India and Greece. Among our most active members
are: Prof. Paul P. Wang, Duke University; Prof. Hisao Ishibuchi, Dept. of
Industrial Engineering, Osaka Prefecture University; Prof. Aynur Unal,
Manufacturing Director LSI Logic, California and Director Manufacturing Program
and Professor at Drexel University; Baldev Raj, Department of Science and Technology, India;
Dr. Nikos Tsourveloudis, Dept. of Production Engineering Management, Technical
University of Creete, Greece; Dr. Eduard Theil, Staff Senior Scientist at
Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, CA;Dr.-Ing. Silvio Simani, Dept. of
Engineering, University of Ferrara, Italy; Dr. Alexandre Evsukoff, Institut
National Polytechnique de Grenoble, France and Dr. Bernhard Sick, University of
Passau, Germnay. Apologies to all our members who were not nominated here -
their research results will be shared only with our group members in future
mail. The number of our members is continuously growing - reflecting the high
interest on the topic in the Soft Computing Community.

2. We have already six papers accepted for the Invited Session on Intelligent
Manufacturing and Fault Diagnosis at the IMACS-IEEE'99 Conference in Athens,
Greece (July 4-8). Given the high interest I have obtained permission from the
Conference Chair to extend the Session to a Track on IM and FD - so we are still
accepting good quality papers! Please send me a title and abstract if you intend
to participate.

3. Prof. Paul Wang offered one Issue in the Information Sciences Journal
dedicated to extended versions of the papers from our IMACS-IEEE'99 Invited
Session. I will serve as Guest Editor, together with Prof. Wang.

4. Prof. Wang has as well invited me to organize a Track on IM$FD
for JICS'2000. I will keep our Group members posted on that issue as well.

5. Given his success with the DESKPACK Discussion Group, I would like to invite
Dr. Pratibha Rajagopalan (actualmente Visiting Scientist at the Fraunhofer
Institute for Nondestructive Testing, Saarbruecken, Germany) to take charge of
our Group's discussions and as well to organize our Group's web-page. Many
thanks to Mr. Frank Hoffmann who offered to link our Web-page to the BISC page!

I look forward for our Group's growth and continuous success!

Mihaela
