Assumption free (neuro)-fuzzy modeling????

I have a paper here of Fang and Chen.

They say: "Fuzzy modeling, ... , is not only assumption free but also rubust
to deviations, even outliers. "

What does this mean?
Do you agree?
(And your statistical friends?)
How about the degree of freedom?
Does this also apply when I use other techniques to develop my model like
clustering or some kind of hybride learning algorithm?
Anybody have any literature on this?
