As an alternative, the fuzzy C-means algorithm has proven quite
successful at image segmentation. It's a clustering algorithm using
fuzzy concepts. Most fuzzy textbooks include some information on this
algorithm, or you can try the inventor's monograph on the subject:

Bezdek, J.C. "Pattern Recognition with Fuzzy Objective Function
Algorithms". Plenum Press; New York, NY, USA, 1981. Hope this helps!
