Abstract

Among the first Finnish pioneers in fuzzy systems are Prof. Christer
Carlsson and Hannu Nurmi as well as doctors Vesa A. Niskanen and
Jorma K. Mattila. They have performed research in this field since the
70's. At first, the focus was on logic, mathematics and decision making.
Then, since the late 80's, several fuzzy applications have also been
constructed, and simultaneously the number of researchers has
increased. Fuzzy systems have been applied to paper and pulp industry,
metal industry and to various projects of smaller scale. Today, fuzziness
is often used together with the other Soft Computing methods such as
neural networks and genetic algorithms.

Central applications and projects will be presented. These include the
USD 20 million national technology programme "Adaptive and Intelligent
Systems Applications" conducted by the Technology Research Centre
of Finland, projects of the Control Engineering Lab at the University of
Oulu and activities of Bisc Special Interest Groups in soft decision
making and philosophy of soft computing.
