Pattern recognition tool in UNIX....

Hi! I'm a complete newbie to AI, and have some very basic knowledge of
statistics. Given that, here's my question:

I'm designing a system where I need some sort of pattern recognition engine
that would take some data as input and be able to spit out if it finds a
pattern based on that data. When I say pattern - I mean not a regular
expression or something like that - maybe I mean more like a trend (or
trends) that I specify. Is there something commercial or free even that
performs something as simple as that? Linux based? Solaris based?

Here's a simple pseudo example of what I need:

I send 5 as input right now. Then 1 minute later send 6, then 1 minute later
send 7... This engine based upon receiving this information can now say, "Oh
- hey those numbers are increasing rather quickly - let's send out a message
saying that" and then a message of some sort is spit out to the routine in
my program that called it...

Do any packages out there support something like this? Is this something so
simple, that it would be more worthwhile to create something on my own? It
must also be able to keep track and analyze more than one unique set of data
and send back messages specific to each set.

I'm a little clueless in this area too, are there any good books anyone can
recommend on Neural Nets or Pattern Recognition applied in software?

Thanks in advance for any assistance - big time!
