OCR for scanned circuit diagrams

Hello,

I am new to OCR, Image Recognition, and AI, and I need to write some
code that analyzes a scanned diagram of a circuit schematic and
organizes its symbols and structure into a database to be published
electronically. Do you know where I could find some algorithms or
reference material (either electronic or printed) that deals with
image recognition of this sort? (general info on OCR/Image Recognition
would be helpful too)
I think that basic OCR algorithms would be a good starting point, but
I need to preserve the structure of the circuit as well as the symbols
contained in it, so more specific information would be very helpful.
Thanks,

Jeff Maurer
