ANNOUNCEMENT OF DOCTORAL OR POSTDOCTORAL POSITIONS

Two doctoral or postdoctoral positions are available for the years
1998 and 1999 at the Department of Automatic Control, Electronic
Engineering and Computing Science (DISAM) of the UNIVERSIDAD
POLITECNICA DE MADRID, Spain.

DURATION AND SALARY

The research visit will be from 12 to 16 months within 1998-1999.
The salary will be between 1,000 and 1,500 ECUS per month depending
on the candidate experience.

JOB DESCRIPTION

The work to perfom will be in the field of Mobile Robotics within
the project MOBINET: Mobile Robotics Technology for Health Care
Services Research Network (Training and Mobility of Researchers
program of the European Community). The project is coordinated by
ZENON, S.A. (Greece). 12 partners from different countries of Europe
are involved in the project.

The outcome of the project is the scientific work for the design
of the prototype of an intelligent and autonomous mobile robot with
high maneuverability and manipulability features. Operational
features of the proposed mobile robot include execution of complicated
manipulation and transportation tasks. The design of the prototype
addresses fully autonomous operation. Sensors and methods for
environment perception and representation are being analyzed. The
behavior of the robot is being optimized for indoor health care tasks,
interacting with the user by high level commands. All levels of
autonomy are being addressed.

The work related with these positions will include, respectively:

1) the hardware and software setup of a mobile platform for
the goals of the project.

2) the implementation of a development/teleoperation/simulation
environment with 3-D capabilities for the mobile platform over
a Silicon Graphics Workstation.

SCIENTIFIC QUALIFICATIONS

The candidates must have experience in:

1) electronics and unix / C++ for position 1.

2) Motif / OpenGL and unix / C++ for position 2.

CONDITIONS FOR CANDIDATES

The candidate must be a young researcher (less than 35 years old).
Each candidate must be a holder of a doctoral degree or of a degree,
obtained from a University or equivalent institution of higher
education, which qualifies him/her to embark on a doctoral degree.
He/She must be a national of a Member State of the European Community
or of an Associated State. He/She must not be spanish and he must not
have carried out his/her normal activities in Spain for more than 18
of the 24 months prior to his appointment.
