UCLA short course on "Video/Image Compression, Wavelets, Neural Networks, Fuzzy Logic, and Chaos"

On June 8-12, 1998, UCLA Extension will present the short course,
"Video/Image Compression, Wavelets, Neural Networks, Fuzzy Logic,
and Chaos", on the UCLA campus in Los Angeles.

The instructors are Harold Szu, PhD, Lamson Professor of Computer
Science, University of Southwestern Louisiana, Lafayette, and Past
President of the International Neural Network Society (INNS); and
Charles Hsu, PhD, Principal Engineer, Trident Systems.

While the disciplines of wavelets, neural networks, fuzzy logic, and
chaos seem divergent, their underlying principles converge for the
purpose of solving invariant pattern recognition problems. For
example, the complex neurodynamic patterns in human visual and hearing

systems can be related to video redundancy reduction which generates
invariant features for detection, classification, and identification
purposes.

The course describes various applications in chaos, fuzzy logic, ANN,
WT, and associated learning algorithms, illustrated in terms of
spatio-temporal information processing such as signal/image de-noise;
signal classification; control device/machine chaos; video-phone
communication codec; chaotic biomedical and heart applications;
intelligent biosensors such as pacemakers and hearing aids; bomb
sniffers, and discrete wavelet transform subband coding for image and
motion estimation for video compression. Participants see how the
human visual system is organized similar to the WT of the
Gabor/Morlet-like edge-map pyramid in terms of the Multiple Resolution

Analyses (MRA) mathematics which reduce the spatial and temporal
redundancies for invariant pattern recognition.

UCLA Extension has presented this highly successful short course
since 1993.
