Special Workshop on Fuzzy Logic (FL) and Evolutionary Computation (EC)
in Process Optimisation

Methodology and Applications Colloquium organised within the framework
of the Fifth UK Fuzzy Systems Workshop by EVONET and ERUDIT.

EVONET is a Network of Excellence=85

ERUDIT is a Network of Excellence for Fuzzy Logic supported by the EU.
It is structured according to sectors of the economy, with Technical
Committee A being responsible for applications in Primary and Process
Industry. The nodes in this committee come from all over Europe, from
industry and from universities.

Introduction to the Workshop

Process Optimisation is a challenging task both from methodological
and application points of view. Process analysis, control and
supervision as well as scheduling are the main problems solved by
optimisation methods. FL and EC have already shown good results in
complementing conventional methods. They are implemented in industries
such as:

* Paper industry (bleach plant control, prediction of pulp and paper
quality scheduling, etc.).

* Steel industry (blast furnace
supervision, continuous casting, rolling mill optimisation, tundish
level control, etc.).

* Cement industry (kiln control, mill
supervision, etc.).

* Bio-technical and chemical industry
(optimisation of fermentation, batch process optimisation and
scheduling, distillation columns, polymerisation processes, etc.).

Hence, the objectives of this special workshop will be:

* To show successful results of the application of FL and EC.
* To discuss methodological combinations and overlaps of FL and EC. =B7
* To define possible features of common activities of EVONET and
ERUDIT.

The workshop will consist of:

* Three presentations by leading practitioners and researchers in the
field of FL and EC.

* One interactive part which should lead to a
description of the methodological and application overlap of FL and
EC. This part consists of a presentation and active contributions from
the participants.
* Two discussions which will consider industrial
applications and the methodological overlap of FL and EC. This should
lead to recommendations for co-operation between EVONET and ERUDIT.

The workshop is targeting:

=B7* Managers and technicians from production and R & D.
=B7* Consulting companies involved in process optimisation projects. =B7
* Experienced researchers in the area of FL and EC.

13:30 13:35 Introduction

Sheffield, United Kingdom.

13:35 14:05 Intelligent Methods in Process Optimisation
