Engineering Doctorate Studentship Available at
Cranfield university, UK

Title: Qualitative Cost Modelling

Industrial Sponsor: British Aerospace MA&A, Samlesbury

The Engineering Doctorate (EngD) programme is intended for research
engineers who expect their subsequent careers in industry to progress
rapidly to positions at senior management or chief executive level.
Cranfield is one of only 5 centres offering this prestigious degree.

The research will study qualitative aspects of cost modelling for
military aircraft. The project is expected to develop a `detail level'
process model for `composite' manufacturing. The study will identify
the quantitative and qualitative drivers for cost estimation. The
research will then concentrate on the qualitative issues and develop
`soft models' for cost estimation. Data collection will involve analysis
of past data, workshops and interviews with experienced cost and
manufacturing engineers. The project is expected to integrate the
`soft models' with existing quantitative cost models. The study will
include investigations into Aritificial Intelligence (AI) techniques
for the qualitative cost modelling. The EngD student will spend a large
part of his/her time with the sponsoring company. There are taught
courses to be attended mainly at Cranfield in the first fifteen months
of the programme.

EPSRC is expected to pay tuition fees to Cranfield. The student would
receive around 10,000 pounds sterling tax free per annum for four years.
Interested graduate/postgraduate students with manufacturing engineering
+ AI/computing background are invited to submit their CV for an informal
discussion over telephone or email. The minimum academic requirement for
entrants to the degree is an upper second class honours degree or its
equivalent, preferably followed by two or three years industrial
Please note that the funding is restricted to British Nationals, in special
cases it may be offered to an EC national.
