SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS:
Potential presenters should submit preferibly an electronic
postscrip version, or 3 hard-copies of a paper (maximum 10 pages).
Individuals not sending a paper but who are interested in participating in
the workshop should send a short description (maximum 2 pages) of
interests and background (partial list of relevant research
work/publications).
Selection of papers will be mainly based on relevance to the focus of
the workshop, clarity of the work submitted, and significance of the research
involved.

FINAL DATE FOR CAMERA READY COPIES TO ORGANIZERS
In order to be included in the working notes distributed to
participants at the workshop, all final versions of those accepted papers
must be supplied by April 22, 1998

DESCRIPTION AND TOPICS OF THE WORKSHOP

Domains such as biology, medicine, psychology, meteorology, ecology,
political science, or economics, amongst many others, are still far from
being the important and productive areas of Fuzzy Logic (FL) that Prof.
Zadeh prophesied in 1973: "By relying on the use of linguistic variables
and fuzzy algorithms, ..., its main applications lie in economics,
management science, artificial intelligence, psychology, linguistics,
information retrieval, medicine, biology, and other fields in which the
dominant role is played by the animate rather than inanimate behaviour of
system constituents" (sic) [L.A. Zadeh, "Outline of a new approach to the
analysis of complex systems and decision process". IEEE Trans. Systems,
Man, and Cybernetics, SMC-3, pp. 28-44, 1973.]

This workshop aims to deal in a serious and profound manner with the
following topics:

* The explication and demonstration of the applicability of Fuzzy
Logic (FL) to Intelligent systems.

* To illustrate selected applications, discussing their enabling
technology and cost/benefit trade-offs.

* What is the state of the art in new application domains of FL,
beyond fuzzy control and its applications in industrial domains and
commercial electronics appliances, which are now classic. Some of these
domains, merely by way of an example of the types of applications and
domains of interest are: fuzzy case-based reasoning, decision support
systems, classification (diagnostics) and prediction, natural language-based
systems, intelligent user interfaces, information retrieval, machine
learning using fuzzy sets, high level programming languages for fuzzy sets
in AI, etc.

* To what measure relevant real-world complex applications are being
tackled on domains such as the ones previously mentioned.

* What are the principal factors limiting the development of real,
complete and complex applications in these domains. In this sense, outside
perspectives on why FL has not significantly penetrated some application
domains are welcomed.

* To present ways of overcoming these factors, such as the synergistic
role of Fuzzy Logic within the field of Soft Computing (SC), where FL,
Genetic Algorithms (GA) and Neural Networks (NN) are combined to synthesise
very successful hybrid intelligent systems.

We strongly encourage that submitted papers should not only deal with
showing applications that are already under development, or which are in
use in these domains, but also with the presentation and discussion of
ideas on how to make the qualitative leap forward so that the presence of
Fuzzy Logic in these domains enjoys the presence and importance that, from
our point of view, it merits.

FORMAT OF WORKSHOP

The format of the workshop is one day, including paper
presentations, discussion periods, one or two invited lectures, and a
final session for summary and discussion (about presented case studies,
new fields of applicability of FL, etc.).

ATTENDANCE

There is an upper limit of 50 participants. Selection of
participants without presentation will be carried out bearing in mind the
availability of places, priority being given to their affinity to and
relative experience in the theme of the workshop.
