Dear Colleague,

May I draw your attention to the following announcement for a
workshop on Fuzzy Systems
to be organised by the Department of Automatic
Control and Systems Engineering, The University of
Sheffield during 26-27 May 1998.
I hope that you will be able to attend this workshop
and contribute by sending an extended abstract outlining
the main thrust of the contribution. Would you please
pass on this message to the relevant people in your
department ?

Many Thanks

Dr M. Mahfouf
Workshop Organiser

RECENT ADVANCES IN AND PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS OF FUZZY SYSTEMS
The Fifth UK Fuzzy Systems Workshop
26-27 May 1998
Whirlow Grange Conference Centre, Sheffield.
Organised by The Department of Automatic Control and Systems
Engineering
The University of Sheffield, with Assistance from ERUDIT

Announcement and invitation for contribution and participation

Since the introduction of the theory of fuzzy sets by L.A. Zadeh in
1965, and the industrial application of the first fuzzy logic
controller by E.H. Mamdani in 1974, fuzzy systems have become a major
player in engineering systems, represented by many conferences each
year; with each year passing the world is indeed becoming fuzzier and
fuzzier!

It is now five years since the first Fuzzy Systems Workshop took place
in Queen Mary College, London, and which was hailed a success. Since
then, several equally successful events have followed and this year,
the Fifth UK fuzzy workshop will be held in Sheffield. The workshop is
aimed at bringing together, for two days, researchers who are
interested or active in the area of fuzzy systems, the informal
setting provides for lively and constructive discussions of new
developments in this integral part of intelligent systems. Previous
workshop gatherings have proved to be a real catalyst for forging new
contacts and new collaborations in this field.

For this year's event we would like to encourage research work showing
1. recent developments in the area of fuzzy systems. 2. industrial
applications of fuzzy techniques.

Young researchers in academia as well as in industry are particularly
encouraged to contribute to this event which has been deliberately
organised as a low-cost event. The following sectors and others will
be addressed:

* Process Industries
* Medicine and Human Factors
* Steel and Paper Production
* Telecommunications and Traffic Systems

The event will last two days and will include brief presentations and
invited lectures by eminent researchers in this area. A special
session on Soft Computing in Process Optimisation will also be
included on Day 2 and will include several talks by well known
researchers on Fuzzy Systems, Genetic Algorithms and Neural Networks.
Whirlow Grange Conference Centre is located in pleasant surroundings
on the outskirts of Sheffield, with easy access by bus from the
Sheffield Interchange. The number of participants is limited to
approximately 50. The total registration charge is fixed at only
80.00 which includes registration, overnight accommodation, lunches,
refreshments, dinners, and an official workshop digest which will
include all contributions.

If you would like to give a presentation at the workshop or would like
more information, send an extended abstract of your presentation by 6
April 1998 or write to:
