BISC_SIG_ES, ESD, will offer four short courses in soft computing:
1. Neuro-Computing
2. Genetic Algorithms
3. Fuzzy Logic
4. Hybrid Models

Courses will focus on fundamentals of soft computing techniques and
their applications in the Earth Sciences.

TARGET AUDIENCE
These courses are directed toward engineers and scientists
(Students) who wish to analyze data and/or develop complex models based
on neural network, fuzzy logic and genetic algorithms. This includes
exploratory data analysis, development of predictive models, time series
models, nonlinear mapping and model identification of complex systems.
Individuals with an interest in multivariate and uncertainty data
analysis will definitely want to attend.

COURSE DESCRIPTION
"Soft Computing" is a practical hands on course designed to give
the engineers and scientists (Students) the fundamentals of many
commonly used methods such as Neural network, fuzzy logic, genetic
algorithms, and hybrid models such as neuro-fuzzy and
neruo-fuzzy-genetic algorithms. The class begins with a review of
elementary statistics and linear algebra, neural network, fuzzy logic
and genetic algorithm and an introduction to the MATLAB software package
for numerical computation and data visualization. Students will work
example problems in teams of two or three using the neural network and
fuzzy logic toolbox for use with MATLAB. The course will also cover non
linear regression methods and sample classification and will finish with
a look at multi-dimensional data and applications of the soft computing
techniques in Earth Sciences.
