I've been working on this and have recently published

Silvert, William. 1997. Ecological impact classification with fuzzy
sets. Ecological Modelling 96:1-10.

A preliminary draft is available at
http://www.mar.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/science/mesd/he/staff/silvert/eicfs/eicfs.html

In addition I have been working with colleagues in Israel and Germany on
applying these classification methods to analysing the benthic impacts
of mariculture, but aside from some conference abstracts this work has
not yet been published.

Martin Baptist of Delft Hydraulics in the Netherlands has been
looking at ways to use neural networks to translate environmental
observations into fuzzy membership functions for this project.
