Dear BISC group.

I apologize for inconveniences caused by multiple announcements
of this seminar. Some people asked for the abstract of the talk
of Prof. Airaksinen, which I received just now.

Ethics of Knowledge and Information
Prof. Timo Airaksinen
BISC Seminar
June 17th, 4:00-5:00pm
310 Soda Hall

I will discuss "information professions" from the point of view of
the ethics of virtue. The key questions are
(i) what is their main "service ideal",
(ii) what kind of authority they possess, and
(iii) what are the virtues they should have?

I will suggest that this
ethics is closely related to that of "knowledge professions", or
scientists who are committed to "truth". I shall argue that this
approach is more interesting than the traditional one which utilizes
the concepts of rights and duties and focuses on some dramatic but
isolated problems.
