Problems of Gradation in Multilayered Extended Semantic Networks

Abstract:

On the one hand, Semantic networks starting with the work of Qillian have a long tradition in natural language meaning representation. They have been further developed by our group to Multilayered Extended Semantic Networks (the so-called MESNET paradigm). The main characteristics of MESNET are the distinction of an intensional and a pre-extensional level in the knowledge representation itself, multidimensional classification of concepts, encapsulation of concepts and a "gebrauchstheoretische" (operational) semantics of the representational means. Despite of the strong expressivity of the formalism, there are still some wants with regard to the treatment of gradation problems by means of this type of knowledge representation. Fuzzy set theory and fuzzy reasoning beginning with the work of Zadeh, on the other hand, have laid a special emphasis on the representation of gradual transitions (let it be the membership of sets or the validity of inferences). The goal of my talk is to further the mutual enrichment of both of this lines of development in discussing problems of gradation in quantification, preextensional representation, trustworthyness of statements and others.
