One's approach to manufacturing scheduling problems is predicated upon one's assumption
about how such problems can be solved. Some use simulation, others prefer expert systems.
Still others prefer some form of math programming (linear and non-linear). Heuristic
or algorithmic approaches are also applied. If the rules for building a "good" schedule
are well known then simulation or ES/AI may be applicable.
I have used a product called MIMI (Manager for Interactive Modeling Interfaces). It is
toolkit oriented to solve a wide variety of problems including production scheduling.
The nature of the business problem will also have a bearing on the solution approach. Some
are more suited to discrete manufacturing (job shop), whereas others are more appropriate for
repetitive/continuous process industries like chemicals.
