complex method for optimization

In their paper "Fuzzy Identification of Systems and Its Applications to
Modeling
and Control" published in IEEE Trans. on Systems, Man and Cybern. Takagi and
Sugeno write, that they use the "well-known" complex method for the
optimization
of the membership functions' parameters.
Unfortunately this method is not "well-known" to me. Could anyone give me a
hint
in this case, please?
