Tentative Announcement

International Symposium on
Integrated Man-Mechatronic Systems
( I M M S ' 96 )

18 -20 June 1996, St.Petersburg, Russia

Integrated Man-Mechatronic Systems (IMMS) are the great class Automatic Systems,
which integrate three closed integrated components:
- mechanical (executive devices with drives, for instance, mechanical arms);
- electronical (devices of information processing);
- man, supplementing functions of previous components, and realizing function
supervisory.

Such systems are the telecontroled space and submarine robots, robots for
execution of works with nuclear radiation and in other extreme conditions,
industrial robots for work in nondetermine environment, medical
micro-mechatronic systems for carry out surgical operations, prosthetic
appliances, service robots etc.

The objective necessity of these systems is explained the following reasons:

- construction of autonomous systems in full, which have intelligence
possibilities of man, for carrying out the complex works in nondetermine,
variable environment is impossible now; if these systems it is possible to
realize in the future, they will be considerably more expensive, than IMMS;
- there are many spheres, in which it is possible to use only IMMS, for
instance, medicine; active prosthetic appliance, medical robots for serving
of sicks etc;
- substitution of man by autonomous system in full will lead to reduction of
activity of man, which use autonomous systems, to physical and intellectual
degradation of these mans.

In this connection, no doubt, there are the great perspectives of development
and expansion of IMMS.

The major focus of this symposium will be placed on strategic initiatives for
the promotion of IMMS, perfecting the control subsystem, sensing, methods and
hardware of interacting man - mechatronic part of IMMS.

This must lead to increase of function possibilities of these systems, to
guaranteeing more reliable function in non-determinate variable environment and
new useful applications.

Discussion on IMMS are also included. All researches and engineers who are
interested in this field are invited to IMMS'96.

Special topics include but are not limited to: Intelligent and Adaptive Control,
Fuzzy control, Neuro Control, Force Control, Man-Machine Interaction (Tele,
Supervisory), Learning, Task-oriented Languages, Sensing, Vision and Active
Vision, Planning, Redundant Systems, Elastic Systems, Microrobotics, Distributed
Robotic Systems, Multi-robot Systems, Applications etc.

General Information

St.Petersburg is one of the most beautiful cities of world. Especially it is
fine in June during so called White Nights, when IMMS'96 will hold.
The city is famous for Museums, Theaters, Ballet. It is known as a center of
science, art and cultural life. Suburbs of St.Petersburg, such as
"Petrodvoretz", "Pavlovsk", "Pushkin" are former residences of tsars. These
suburbs are known their beautiful architecture and nature. During of IMMS'96
will take place excursions on St.Petersburg, Suburbs, Universities and firms,
which have relation to IMMS.

Technical visits are planned also.
