Uncertain Reasoning Workshop II (URWS II):
Uncertainty in Robotics and Multi-Agent Systems

The ability to reason with uncertain information is an indispensable
requirement for modeling intelligent behavior in a complex and dynamic
environment. This is why uncertain reasoning has become a major research
topic of AI with many important applications. Especially the challenges of
cognitive robotics and intelligent agent systems have recently increased
the demand for appropriate, powerful, and efficient formalisms and
methodologies to deal with uncertainty, for instance, in sensor
interpretation, environment modeling, spatial reasoning, planning and
decision making, self-localization, and motion control.
This workshop is intended to provide a forum to present and discuss new
approaches and perspectives to dealing with uncertainty in robotics and
multi-agent systems. Like its predecessor "Workshop on Uncertainty in AI" at
KI'2001, its aim is to bring together researchers from different communities
to improve understanding and cross-fertilization, this time between the area
of uncertainty in artificial intelligence on the one hand, and the areas of
robotics and multi-agent systems on the other hand.
The main focus of the meeting is on uncertainty in robotics and multi-agent
systems related to the following topics:
* formalisms for reasoning under uncertainty
(probabilistic, possibilistic, ...),
* qualitative versus numerical representations,
* revision and update of uncertain knowledge,
* sensor uncertainty and fusion,
* environment modeling under uncertainty,
* approximate localization and motion-control,
* action and planning under uncertainty,
* user/actor modeling under uncertainty
(prediction, argumentation, negotiation),
Some perspectives of interest are:
* theoretical foundations,
* new methods, systems, and implementations,
* algorithms and complexity,
* real-life applications,
* open problems and future challenges.
Researchers from the area of uncertainty in AI as well as researchers from
robotics and multi-agent systems are invited to participate in the workshop.
For the workshop, we invite full papers on - but not limited to - the themes
listed above. Submitted papers should not exceed 12 pages (excluding title
page and references) of standard LaTeX 12pt article format. Work reported
should not have appeared elsewhere.
We strongly encourage electronic submission of papers in postscript or pdf
format. To submit a paper electronically, send an email message to Thomas
Lukasiewicz (see email addresses below) that includes the following
* paper title (plain text),
* author names (plain text),
* surface mail and email address of contact author (plain text),
* a short abstract including keywords (plain text),
* paper body (postscript or pdf format).
Authors unable to submit papers electronically should send the above four
items by email and three copies of the complete paper by surface mail to
Thomas Lukasiewicz (at the address in Rome, see below).
The proceedings will be published as technical report, which will be
available at the workshop.
Submission of papers: June 3, 2002
Acceptance decision by: June 30, 2002
Camera ready copy due: July 31, 2002
Please note that registration for the KI2002 conference is a necessary
condition for participating in the workshop.
