    Abstract:

To improve and simplify the user access to collections of text or multimedia
objects visualization and clustering methods can be used. In this talk we
    present
an approach that combines conventional search methods with a visualization of
the object collection obtained by use of a growing self-organizing map. Thus,
the considered objects are grouped based on their similarity and can be
visualized in a labelled two dimensional projection.

The main objectives of this approach are to provide a visual profile of the
considered collection, to find clusters of similar objects and to develop an
intuitive navigation and search tool. The method can be applied to databases
consisting of arbitrary objects if at least a description based on a numerical
    feature vector can be given.

We will also give an overview of realized and possible applications and current
    research topics.
