    IMPORTANT DATES
    Extended summary: 30 January 2002
Notification of acceptance: 15 March 2002
Camera-ready submission of full papers: 15 April 2002

    OBJECTIVES
As Europe enters into the emerging global information society, new
opportunities are arising for cost-effective solutions to education and
training. The convergence of information and communication
    technologies is
enabling the creation and implementation of computer aided and/or
multimedia based techniques. It is recognized that traditional,
mass-produced, highly controlled static and rigid educational and
    training
methods cannot cope with the greatly increased demand for higher
    education
and with the need to bring ever-increasing amounts of information,
knowledge and expert reasoning to students who may be far from a
traditional classroom. We increasingly hear concepts like "virtual
    class"
or "virtual laboratory". The planned conference is one of the series
initiated by the Euro-Med Information Society Steering Group and
    has the
goal of bringing together experts to discuss the current state of the
    art
in this area. Internet-based education and training will be a topic of
    particular interest.

    TOPICS
The scope of the conference will cover but not be limited to:
    - New strategies for higher education and training
    - Network based education and training
    - Intelligent training technology
    - Authoring technology
    - Virtual classroom, virtual university
    - Asynchronous learning
    - Distance education
    - Quality management in higher education
    - Accreditation issues
    - Industry-institute partnership
    - Small and medium scale enterprises and the use of new
    technologies in
their training programs - Role of information society and global
    communication system

    SCIENTIFIC PROGRAM
The duration of the conference will be three days. The scientific
    program will include:
    - Oral presentations
    - Video presentations
    - Demonstrations of technology based training material
    - Panel sessions

    PROCEEDINGS
The proceedings of the conference will be published and be
    available at
the time of the conference. Additionally, it is planned to publish
    some
selected papers of the conference in IEEE Transactions on
    Education and
the journal Industry & Higher Education.

    PAPER SUBMISSION
Prospective participants are invited to submit electronically a 700-
    1000
word extended summary. The details are available on the web site
    of the
conference. Please, send the extended summary by e-mail to Jan
    Paralic
