Topic: Iterative experiment design for the modeling of fed-batch bioprocesses
Start: as soon as possible
Description:

A one-year postdoc position is available at the Control Laboratory, Faculty of
Information Technology and Systems, Delft University of Technology. The
research topic
is iterative experiment design for the modeling and identification of
pharmaceutical
processes. The project is a part of the M3 DIOC project: "Mastering the
Molecules in
Manufacturing" and it is carried out in a close cooperation with the
Kluyver Laboratory
for Biotechnology (Prof. J.J. Heijnen and Dr. Preben Krabben) and DSM
Anti-Infectives,
Delft.

Biopharmaceuticals are usually produced in batch or fed-batch fermentation
processes.
Current methods for process design and optimization rely on the modeling of
the process
and identification of its parameters by means of expensive and time-consuming
experiments, designed in a heuristic way.

Systematic iterative experiment design is expected to shorten the process
development
time. The main idea is to build an initial process model using a small
number of
experiments and then use this model to design new experiments to gradually
improve the
model accuracy. Different modeling techniques are applied: mechanistic
modeling,
metabolic modeling, hybrid modeling by including fuzzy logic and neural
networks as
black-box or gray-box modeling tools. The postdoc researcher will use
experimental data
originating from a project on actinomycetes and will closely cooperate with
researchers
involved in an on-going project on hybrid modeling of fed-batch
bioprocesses at the
Control lab and at the Kluyver lab.

The candidates should have a Ph.D. degree in either control engineering,
applied
mathematics or bioprocess engineering. Applications including a Curriculum
