Join the research team at Hewlett-Packard Laboratories aimed at
dramatically improving mission-critical business solutions. The
e-Services Solutions and Management Department (ESSMD) in the Software
Technology Laboratory of Hewlett-Packard Laboratories, Palo Alto is
seeking a creative individual to lead a group of 16 highly motivated and
talented software researchers and project managers. Use your leadership,
technical guidance and vision of modern Internet and appliance computing
to help shape the future of distributed e-service computing by developing
new capabilities and technologies for the management and provisioning of
mission critical solutions, services, and appliances.

The research of the department is directed at enabling flexible,
guaranteed service delivery in the emerging e-service and appliance-based
computing world. Our work encompasses many aspects of the construction
and management of highly customizable business-critical solutions. This
includes activities such as: (1) Design and prototyping of agent-based,
model-driven monitoring and control of distributed computing systems,
including network and computing elements, applications, processes, and
distributed e-services and transactions (2) Application, service and
appliance portals; (3) Customizable, mission-critical software
architectures and middleware; (4) Agent-mediated e-commerce systems; (5)
Mobile appliance-based applications; and (6) XML-based vocabulary and
protocols for service registration, discovery, execution and management.

The ideal candidate has strong technical and business vision, coupled
with a demonstrated ability to lead and motivate a team of
researchers. He or she will be responsible for managing both the
day-to-day activities and the strategic research portfolio of the team.
He or she will also work closely with other department managers and
laboratory scientists to shape the work in the Laboratory, and build
strong working relationships with internal business partners to define
and execute a strategic research program leading to technology transfers
with high impact.

Desired Qualifications:

* Ph.D. in CS, or the equivalent, with at least 5 years research
  management experience.

* Demonstrated ability to lead, manage, motivate and develop an
  industrial or academic research team.

* Excellent communication, presentation and teamwork skills; energetic,
  organized, self-motivated.

* Demonstrated ability to capture and lead presentation of intellectual
  property through patents and industry and academic publications.

* In-depth knowledge of key Internet, distributed systems and management
  technologies and trends (such as E-speak, Chai, OpenView, DCOM,
  ActiveX, BizTalk, CIM, Java, JINI, XML, DMTF..)
