[Q]fuzzy control w/o rule

I have learned about fuzzy control which is basically have fuzzy
inference, over 2 fuzzy sets and rules. But now, one who I know said
there is the control with just one fuzzy set (input and output in terms
of rule) but without rule, just one to one correspondant fuzzy control.
It is strange for me to understand that. And, he said the parameter
such as height of membership function, overlap etc are modified to
control. Then, he left without answering details. What am I going to
do? Of course use newsgroup. ^.^ will thank for answering...
