you might want to read one of the follwing two books:

J. C. Bezdek "Pattern recognition with Fuzzy Objective Function Algorithms",
Plenum Press New York 1981.

F. Hoeppner, F. Klawonn, R. Kruse, T. Runkler "Fuzzy Cluster Analysis -
Methods for Image Recognition, Classification, and Data Analysis",
Wiley 1999.
