The aim of this session is to give scholars and professionals of Medical =
Informatics and Bioinformatics the opportunity to gather, communicate=20
and exchange research ideas and results. During the last few years=20
a new interest has appeared to stimulate a synergy between both =
disciplines,=20
combining theories, methods and applications. Institutions such as the=20
European Commission and US private and public organizations=20
have launched different initiatives to stimulate such interaction. =20

In this session, authors are encouraged to submit papers dealing with=20
all aspects of intelligent information and knowledge processing,=20
analysis, and management in biomedicine. Particularly, methods or
applications that could be common or reused in both Medical Informatics =
and=20
Bioinformatics. Topics of interest include (but are not limited to):=20
Intelligent decision-making in medicine and genetics
Data mining in biomedical research (e.g., clinical and genomic =
databases)
Integrated computer systems in biomedicine
Intelligent systems in medical and genetic education and research=20
Intelligent modelling in biomedicine
Internet-based methods for exchange of information among heterogeneous=20
medical and genetic sources

Submissions
Papers should be submitted for review in electronic format (preferably =
in=20
Word, PDF or PostScript) to the Chair (vmaojo@fi.upm.es), using=20
the subject-line "KES'2002 Special Session". Authors are encouraged to =
contact
the chair expressing their intention to submit a paper.
Papers must be formatted as detailed in IOS Instructions=20
for the Preparation of a Camera-Ready Manuscript=20
(see the KES 2002 homepage for details). The maximum=20
length of papers is five pages (when prepared according to the IOS=20
instructions). Longer papers will be subject to an additional page =
charge.=20
Please note that final versions of accepted papers must be submitted in =
hard copy.

All papers must be presented by one of the authors, who must pay the =
registration fee.=20
The session papers will be published in the Conference Proceedings=20
(IOS Press, Amsterdam, the Netherlands). Extended versions of=20
selected papers will be considered for publication in the=20
KES Journal (International Journal of Knowledge-Based Intelligent=20
Engineering Systems).
