BERKELEY INITIATIVE IN SOFT COMPUTING (BISC)

A new BISC special interest group in Environment Management Systems as
part of BISC-SIG-ES is being formed

    To: BISC Group

    From: Masoud Nikravesh/Lotfi A. Zadeh

Urbanization and industrialization are competing with each other in
environmental degradation in spite of initiating control strategies and
environmental laws. Uncertainties involved in the policy issues and in
the field data for the assessment of environmental quality coupled with
growing importance of environmental protection , calls for the
application of soft computing techniques to environment management
systems. Collective wisdom of environment professionals and the soft
computing experts in analyzing the issues would be a step forward in
achieving the objective of environmental protection.

With a view to promote the use of soft computing with focus on fuzzy
logic, a new Special Interest Group (SIG) –Environment Management
Systems (EMS) as part of BISC-SIG-ES with Dr. Ashok W. Deshpande,
Former Deputy Director, National Environmental Engineering Research
Institute , India is being formed. Initial members of the steering
    committee include:

    1.Professor Lotfi A. Zadeh (BISC-UCB,US)

    2.Dr. Thomas Mckone (LBNL,UCB,US)

    3.Professor Istavan Bogardi ( UNB,US)

    4.Dr. Masoud NIkravesh (BISC-UCB,US)

    5. Professor Mori Anvari (BISC-UCB, LBNL-US)

6.Professor Timothy Ross (UNM, NEW MEXICO)

    7.Professor Purushottam. Khanna (SIES, INDIA)

    8. Professor Lucien Duckstein (UNB,US)

    9. Professor Ludmila I. Kuncheva (UCW, UK)

    10. Professor G. Facchinetti (UNIMO, ITLY)

    11. Dr. Ashok Deshpande (Ex. NEERI, INDIA)

Broadly , the environment management systems sub assumes but is not
    limited to the following areas:

    1.Quality Assessment

    2.Pollution Control Strategies

    3.Natural Resources Accounting and conservation

    4.Impact and Risk Management

    5.System Modeling and Optimization

    6.Policy Issues and Laws

If you feel interested in joining the group, please send E-Mail to Dr.
    Ashok W. Deshpande at “ashok_deshpande@hotmail.com” OR ashokwd@yahoo.com
    with a copy to "zadeh@cs.berkeley.edu" and "nikravesh@cs.berkeley.edu".

    Warm Regards,

    Masoud Nikravesh
    BISC Acting Associate Director

cc: Lotfi A. Zadeh, BISC Director
