    SENIOR RESEARCH OFFICERS
    (eGadgets)

    Department of Computer Science

Applications are invited for 2 Senior Research Officer positions for a
three-year project funded by the Future and Emerging Technologies (FET)
Disappearing Computer initiative that is part of the European Union's Fifth
    RTD Framework.

The aim of the eGadgets project is to devise, build and test a
software/hardware paradigm to enable groups of network based gadgets
(everyday electronic based objects, from watches, through mobile phones to
kitchen appliances) to associate without detailed user intervention and
synergistically co-operate so as to optimally serve the owner or user of the
gadgets. Users would normally configure groupings around common environments
(GadgetWorlds) such as cars, homes, offices etc (using tools to be developed
as part of the project). The key to achieving these aims is the inclusion of
    some intelligence in devices.

Candidates should have a postgraduate qualification in Computer Science and
experience of fuzzy (or neural) control in embedded-systems and programming
(preferably Java). It would also be helpful, but not essential, to have
some knowledge of Behaviour Based Robotics, Machine Learning or
Embedded-Agents. General details of the Essex group can be found in
    cswww.essex.ac.uk/intelligent-buildings and information on the
University/local area is available in www.essex.ac.uk.

The appointments, initially for one year, will be on the grade 1A scale for
Research Staff, 16,775-25,213 per annum. Starting salary will depend on
    age and previous experience.

Further details and application forms may be obtained by telephoning
Colchester (01206) 872462 (24 hours), by email to staffing@essex.ac.uk or by
writing to the Personnel Section, University of Essex, Wivenhoe Park,
    Colchester, CO4 3SQ.

    Closing Date: 28th February 2001
